Hello Friends of the Orchard!

We are writing today to share the story of another project we were able to complete thanks to support from the NRCS (National Resources Conservation Service) and our donors. The Spaces of Opportunity high tunnel is designed to extend the growing seasons, warming the soil and air now, while it sports a shade cover in the summer, providing a 10-15 degree break from the heat.

We began the engineering and construction of this 90’x30’x12’(H) “high tunnel” a year ago this month. We finished construction in early summer and are now harvesting hundreds of pounds of vine ripe tomatoes and chile peppers. Yes! In December and January! We’ll soon rotate a new healthy crop inside and plant a 3 sisters garden on the outside with the assistance of students from the Lassen Academy of Science and Nutrition. This space is a great example of what these donor-supported projects can achieve, and the beauty and growth that comes about when a great team works together to find creative solutions to local problems. More on that next week when we highlight the irrigation innovations at Spaces of Opportunity!

Orchard work is made possible by the generosity of our donors who see the value in our mission, and take the step to support it. A HUGE THANKS to those who have already made a 2021-22 contribution. We have already raised over $4,000 in donations since December on our way to a goal of $20,000! If you are interested in supporting our work in 2022, you can find the link to donate on our website, or can contact us at info@orchardlearningcenter.org.

Thank you for your time, and for taking a moment to learn more about what we do!
